Creamed coconut (not to be confused with ‘coconut cream’) is the unsweetened dehydrated fresh meat of a mature coconut, that has been ground into semi-solid white cream. Creamed coconut is essentially the same as coconut butter (which is different again to coconut oil). It solidifies at normal room temperature.

Creamed coconut is ideal to use when you need a coconut flavour but you don’t want additional liquid, as coconut cream or milk would add to your recipe. You can roughly chop it or scrape some of it with a spoon into whatever you are cooking, for example a curry or custard.
